헬레니즘에서 크리스티아니즘으로 : 기욤 뷔데와 그의 시대
16세기 프랑스 휴머니즘을 대표하는 학자이자 콜레쥐 드 프랑스의 창립자라는 명성에도 불구하고, 기욤 뷔데에 대한 연구는 지극히 드문 편이다. 본고는 기욤 뷔데의 생애와 저작을 소개하고 그의 학문세계를 이루는 두 가지 특성, 즉 현실참여적 측면과 종교적 측면을 고찰하면서 이를 통해 프랑스 휴머니즘이 지닌 복합적 성격에 접근하고자 하는 시도이다. 1468년 출생 후 1540년에 사망할 때까지, 기욤 뷔데는 로마법과 고대의 경제생활에 대한 연구를 통해 ‘백과사전적 지식’, 즉 총체적인 지식에 도달하고자 노력한 휴머니스트였다. 이런 뷔데의 지적 헌신은 한편으로 휴머니즘을 현실 세계의 발전을 위한 도구로 활용하려는 의지의 표현이기도 했다. 그러나 휴머니즘을 세속적 발전의 동력으로 삼고자 시도한 뷔데의 노력은 1517년부터 시작된 종교개혁의 열풍 속에 빛을 잃게 된다. 프랑스에서 휴머니즘 연구가 이단의 씨앗처럼 여겨지는 가운데, 휴머니스트 진영의 대표자로서 뷔데는 1535년 『헬레니즘에서 크리스티아니즘으로 가는 통로』를 집필, 휴머니즘의 현실적 가치를 옹호하고 이를 종교적으로 변호하고자 시도했다. 이 저서에서 뷔데는 휴머니즘에 천착한 자신의 과거가 신을 사랑하고 이해하는 새로운 신학 ‘필로테이아’를 가능케 하는 기반이 될 것이라 기대했다. 이처럼 프랑스 휴머니즘이란 ‘헬레니즘’, 즉 고전고대에 대한 연구와 현실에 대한 관심에서 ‘크리스티아니즘’, 즉 종교적 성찰로 나아가는 지적 여정이라 파악할 수 있겠다.
From the Hellenism to the Christianism : Guillaume Budé and his Times
The purpose of this study was to introduce Guillaume Budé’s life and works, and to understand two dimensional aspects of french humanism through his intellectual career. Budé devoted his life to philological studies, especially at the field of Roman law and ancient economic life, with which he believed that he could reach encyclopedia, totality of knowledge. Furthermore, Budé asserted that humanism should be the tool for the development of the real world, particularly France and its grandeur. However, humanism in France was increasingly regarded as a seed of heretical belief at the beginning of 1530’s. As the overt leader of french humanism, Budé was obliged to defend practical utility and religious value of studia humanitatis. His ideas were brought to fruition when he authored De transitu hellenismi ad christianismum. In his masterpiece, Budé insisted that humanism could be the foundation for true religious awakening. The title of Budé’s book also summarize intellectual itinerary of french humanism in the sixteenth century.
